The first mountain stage of the Tour of Hainan has seen a good performance for the team Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia that has placed both Simone Velasco and Jacopo Mosca in the top 15.

Another bad day for the breakaway riders with Gatis Smukulis, last survivor of a three riders attack, that was caught by a very fast paced and selected peloton on the last KOM of the day.

With the yellow jersey of Manuel Belletti in trouble, the pace was getting even higher with the attack of the swiss rider Thalmann that was the first on the top of the climb with 10″ on a first bunch with Simone Velasco followed few seconds behind by another small bunch with Jacopo Mosca that on the downhill was able to avoid the crash of Davide Ballerini but in the same time his chances to bridge to the head of the race were gone.

Once that Thalmann was caught it was the time of Gino Mader to attack and anticipate the sprint to achieve his first professional win just before the first chasers group, with Simone Velasco in 7th place, and 40″ before Mosca’s group with the former GC winner who ended in 15th place.

In the general classification is now the dutch rider Raymond Kreder the new leader with Simone Velasco in 8th place at 15″ and Jacopo Mosca in 15th at 56″. Tomorrow from Wuzhishan to Sanya a short stage that suits the sprinters.
