An unbelievable brave team effort wasn’t enough for the riders of Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia that were absolutely protagonists in the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia, Tirano – Canazei, but they weren’t able to achieve the final win.

Julen Amezqueta, Matteo Busato and Ilia Koshevoy attacked at the bottom of the second climb of the day, Passo del Tonale, entering a 40 riders break that was chasing the 3 riders who moved on the previous climb, the Passo dell’Aprica.

The great work of Koshevoy in front of the bunch helped Amezqueta and Busato to come back on the head of the race before the long slight slope that was bringing the riders till the finish line of Canazei.

Between the -15 and -10 kms to go both our riders were trying to anticipate the final but they couldn’t follow the decisive attack of Pierre Rolland that with 7 kms to go started his winning action.

In the sprint for the second place Matteo Busato ended 5th with Amezqueta, at his third consecutive day in the breakaway, 11th.

Tomorrow from Moena to Ortisei dolomitic epic stage with 5 KOM and no flat zones.
